Bridal Hair & make up: Making the right choices for you wedding day!

Sunday January 11th 2015

Lipstick and Curls have been fortunate enough to work with over 500 brides on their special day.  One of the most important things about your wedding day, apart from marrying the man of your dreams, is the way you look and feel and hair and make-up plays an integral part of the process. Brides consider this so important that the search begins almost instantly for the perfect dress and the perfect hair and make up to compliment the final look.

Some lucky brides know exactly what they are looking for and have a great deal of confidence in how to get what they want and also how it will look. If you are like most brides this may be daunting. I think this is a very natural emotion and considering this will be one of the most important days of your life you want to be comfortable and happy with the choices made in this area.

Firstly congratulations if you have recently got engaged. You can now begin searching and designing the wedding day that you desire. High on the list of priorities is the dress. When buying the dress try and imagine how you will complete the look, consider your accessories not only for your body but also for your hair as this could dramatically change the overall image and style of the dress. Think about the neck line and imagine how your hair will be shaped, if you have a high detailed neck line you probably wouldn’t want to wear your hair down for instance therefore getting as much visual information from the start will help make the process easier and less stressful.

Brides rarely embark on the hair and make up themselves and wisely so! If your budget will stretch to a professional then that would be my first choice however if you are on a tighter budget you may want to trust the ability of a friend or a family member spending plenty of time working together and trying different options and styles until you get it right. Take plenty of pictures and make a scrapbook that you can keep referring to in the run up to the big day.

Choosing a professional artist is also a big decision and one I wouldn’t rush into. Make sure you do plenty of research into the artist and ask to see examples of their work so you can be confident of their ability and style. Make sure they are fully qualified, fully trained and fully insured and don’t feel uncomfortable asking to see certificates if you have any doubt about their work. Once you are happy with your choice you then need to meet the artist. This is a good opportunity to try out different styles and most importantly to see if you are comfortable with them as a person as it is important that you feel comfortable and at ease throughout the session. Take pictures together and always say if you are unsure about something. The right hair and make up style for the day should compliment your dress, work well with a theme or colour scheme, if you have one, but most importantly make you look and feel special and enhancing all your very best features. Finally once you are happy make sure they save the date!

Other things to think about is do you have the right hair or look for the style you desire, in most cases hair extensions can be applied so a great deal is achievable. Make sure your artist is using a make up brand of professional quality as this will need to last all day and needs to work with the photography and lighting that will be implemented on your wedding day. Ask your artist about lip sealants, brow shaping and individual lashes to enhance your features.

Most importantly enjoy this experience, all brides enjoy being pampered on their wedding day and also enjoy the process. Make sure you have the confidence to ask questions and to say if it doesn’t feel or look right. A professional will understand and be glad of the input so don’t worry and if you need that little bit of extra support then bring a friend or family member along as it’s always good to get a second opinion.
